I Watched Watchmen

Last night I had the pleasure of going to the Belfast premiere of Watchmen, thus meaning, free drink beforehand. Hell yes.

Anyway, I can't write reviews, so I'm just gonna list what I liked and what I didn't like about this INCREDIBLE MASTERPIECE OF A FILM.

What I liked:

  • Rorschach - Jackie Earl Haley was Rorschach. The rasp, the broken sentences, everything. He had him down to a tee, and I loved every scene he was in, espescially his death scene. As he said his final words, followed by the "Do it. DO IT!", I felt a chill run down my spine.
  • Ozymandias - In the reviews I had read, a lot of people had undermined Matthew Goode, however, I thought he was excellent and I actually felt a little creeped out by him when he was revealed as the big bad.
  • Music - The score was great, reminded me of Blade Runner in some places, which is never a bad thing. The use of popular music worked brilliantly also. Hearing Hallelujah during the Dan/Laurie sex scene was amazing.
  • The sex scene I mentioned above - Holy Shit! Anymore and I would have felt like I was watching Pornhub. This is good.
  • Editing - The film flowed perfectly. Sure, a number of things were left out and had to be, but there were never any plot-holes and my guest, who hadn't read the comic was never confused. Still, I have to say, the Absolute cut is gonna make my head explode.
  • Effects - Loved Manhattan, loved exploding people, loved the gore, loved the ending, loved Mars, loved Karnak, loved the effects.
  • The Ending - Ah yes, the squid-less ending. You know what, I preferred this ending. It's been hard to admit that, but this ending worked better, really bringing it back to the characters, and somehow making Ozy even more of a sneaky bastard.
  • The action - The action was great. Just the right level of OTT.
What I didn't like:
  • Nixon's nose - Too big, but doesn't even put a dent in this film.
